Telegram in China: how to get and stay connected in 2026

Telegram has been blocked in mainland China since 2015. The Great Firewall (GFW) drops connections to Telegram's MTProto servers and DNS-poisons the official domains. To use Telegram from inside China you need a VPN that the GFW can't detect — that rules out OpenVPN, WireGuard, and most commercial brands.

Why standard VPNs fail in China

The GFW does much more than DNS-based blocking. It uses deep packet inspection plus active probing — it'll send unsolicited traffic at your server to fingerprint the protocol. OpenVPN handshake is detected and blocked. WireGuard's UDP signature is detected. Even older Shadowsocks variants are now identifiable.

Get Telegram working with Arcana

1. Get a subscription before you arrive — or use a backup VPN to bootstrap

The catch-22: you can't open the Arcana Telegram bot if Telegram is already blocked. Two ways around it:

Why Reality is harder for the GFW to block

Reality embeds your VLESS tunnel inside what looks like a real TLS handshake with a real, known domain (e.g. www.microsoft.com). The GFW sees an ordinary HTTPS connection to a major website and lets it through. There's no detectable VPN signature.

During sensitive periods

Around party congresses, anniversaries, or major political events, the GFW gets more aggressive. Reality is more resistant than older protocols but no VPN is 100% guaranteed. If one product gets unstable, switch to another inside the bot — your subscription URL works for all of them, no extra cost.
